Join Libero Canto Teacher and Certified Kodály Instructor, Kinga Cserjési, for our new Kodály Choir designed for beginners and anyone who wants to improve their musical skills. Through playful exploration of folk music from around the world, students will gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental elements of music such as rhythm, scales, and harmony, as well as sight reading.
Zoltán Kodály was THE father of the music education system in Hungary, and the work he did with his colleague, Jenő Ádám, is still hugely influential in music education systems around the world. Some of the hallmarks of the Kodaly concept include singing syllables like “do, re, mi” to develop better pitch relationships and ear training, and lots of movement games to build and internalize a strong sense of rhythm. He also used a lot of folk songs in his work because, as simple as they may seem, they use an immense variety of musical elements.
The goal of this program is to explore some of the musicianship building exercises of Kodály in a playful, supportive, beginner friendly way, and then apply those skills to choral/ensemble singing.
Some of the skills you can look forward to building in this program are:
- Learning to read music…even if you don’t already
- Developing your ear and recognizing various musical elements (scales, meters, etc.)
- Gaining more experience and confidence in group and part singing
- Developing more freedom in your singing through the Libero Canto Singing Approach
- Expanding your knowledge of world folk music repertoire
“The Level 1 Kodály class greatly increased my musical skills and understanding. It was also a nourishing and joyful experience that I looked forward to each week. The classes were incredibly organized and effective. Each class was challenging, but the exercises were so embodied and playful that it was never frustrating. I appreciated how supportive and accepting the teacher and students were. I highly recommend this class!” -Shannon, Kodály Student
